As a married Jewish couple living in South Bend, Indiana, we try to ground our lives in the best values of our tradition. That’s why we participate in our synagogue, why we celebrate the Sabbath, and why we keep a kosher (and vegan) kitchen. It’s also why we both chose to be public school teachers and recently taught to our students the history of the Holocaust and the importance of speaking out against injustice. And it’s why we chose, on this year’s Nakba Day, which fell not just on Shabbat but also several days into Israel’s latest war on the people of Gaza, to pray for Palestine outside the gates of our local Jewish Federation. When I started working in the St. Louis Jewish community more than a dozen years ago, one of the first people to call and welcome me was Marci Mayer Eisen, director of the Millstone Institute and staff person for JProStl, which supports professionals working in the STL Jewish community. At the time, I mostly knew Eisen through her husband, Rick, a college buddy, but that didnât stop her from reaching out to find out if there was anything I needed.Â
In the 12 years since, I donât think more than a couple of months have gone by without the two us checking in with each other. Mostly Iâm the one who benefits because she has terrific story suggestions. Heck, she knows pretty much everyone working in the STL Jewish community, and then some. Sheâs also an incredible sounding board for story ideas and ways to collaborate with other Jewish organizations.
