Feb 8, 2021 With Japan’s second state of emergency already impacting NPB and J. League teams ahead of their respective 2021 seasons, both leagues plan to push for more flexible quarantine rules for players entering Japan when they are finally allowed to do so. At Monday’s meeting of the two leagues’ joint coronavirus task force, officials from both organizations revealed that dozens of players, coaches and family members have been affected by the country’s entry ban for anyone except citizens and current residents, a situation NPB Commissioner Atsushi Saito described as “a big problem.” The J. League reported that 23 players, six coaches and 24 family members are waiting to enter Japan ahead of their season’s Feb. 26 start, while NPB said 48 players and coaches, as well as two team staffers, were in a similar situation ahead of their own campaign’s launch on March 26. ....

League would have an easier time preparing for the 2021 campaign. The novel coronavirus pandemic, now in its second year, had other plans. With COVID-19 still far from contained in Japan which registered its 5,000th death from the virus last weekend the J. League’s offseason has been fraught with uncertainty and rattled by positive tests across more than a dozen clubs. The situation has led to a heightened state of caution as teams enter their preseason preparations. The 20 J. League clubs wintering in Okinawa Prefecture, one of 11 prefectural-level authorities including Tokyo covered by the current state of emergency declaration, have closed their training sessions and practice games to the public. ....

League champion Kawasaki Frontale lifted their fifth major trophy in four years on Friday, defeating Gamba Osaka 1-0 at Tokyo’s National Stadium to claim their first-ever Emperor’s Cup and round out their 2020 domestic double. Frontale, known for years as Japanese soccer’s “silver collector” for their string of second-place finishes across domestic competitions, completed their silverware collection having won the J. League, Levain Cup, Super Cup and Emperor’s Cup in a four-season span between 2017-2020. Friday’s result came four years after Frontale’s first Emperor’s Cup final appearance ended in a defeat to Kashima Antlers. ....
