Pamplin Media Group - CEO: Rising crime spurs closure of SE Portland Burgerville

August 03 2021 The unionized burger joint in Portland s Lents neighborhood is no longer safe for employees, says Burgerville CEO Jill Taylor. Burgerville has locked the doors of its Lents area eatery in Southeast Portland. The closure billed as temporary comes after many months of worsening conditions at the neighborhood burger joint, 3504 S.E. 92nd Ave., due to rising problems with crime and vandalism, the company said in an Aug. 3 statement. The iconic Pacific Northwest chain says it hired private security in an effort to improve employee and customer safety, but to no avail. The environment around the restaurant has deteriorated seriously, a company spokesperson told the Tribune. Police are now being called daily. Burgerville employees have found weapons, drug paraphernalia and human waste on the property.

Pamplin Media Group - Lawyer: Laurelhurst homeless' belongings unlawfully trashed

August 03 2021 Portland lawyer Michael Fuller says trackers attached to the belongings show they were wrongfully taken to a local waste transfer station. A local lawyer claims he has ironclad proof that belongings taken during a recent campsite sweep in Portland were unlawfully dumped in the trash. Michael Fuller, who made a last-ditch legal maneuver last week to halt the clearing of tents from Laurelhurst Park, says he surreptitiously attached Apple AirTag tracking devices to 16 personal items with permission from several campers ahead of the clean-up by city contractor Rapid Response Bio Clean. Now, Fuller says, the wireless location signals show some of those possessions including a pair of gloves, a speaker, two canvas paintings, and a french press ended up at the Recology Oregon waste transfer station, 6161 N.W. 61st Ave.

Portland City Council bars homeless camps from forested areas during the dry season

City of Portland Originally published on July 28, 2021 1:35 pm On Wednesday, Portland City Council unanimously approved fire bureau protocols that aim to keep homeless individuals from camping in large forested swaths of the city during wildfire season. Following a dramatic uptick in fire calls related to outdoor camping, Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, who oversees the fire bureau, asked the city fire marshal in April to figure out a humane way to get the numbers down. The fire bureau returned with two proposed protocols it believes will reduce the risk of a devastating blaze. The first protocol will dispatch outreach teams to high-risk zones where a single spark from a fire pit or a cigarette butt could lead to a destructive urban wildfire. These efforts will take place during wildfire season or when Multnomah County declares a burn ban. Outreach teams will warn campers about the fire risks posed by both housed and unhoused Portlanders and the dangers of remaining in the are
