ETS incident reports are up nearly 500 per cent and that's helpful: councillor

The City of Edmonton’s Urban Planning Committee heard a report Tuesday on the $21.4-million investment made by the city in 2018 to improve safety and security on Edmonton transit.
The investment included infrastructure improvements – such as security cameras and protective shields for drivers – as well as security guards and additional training for transit operators and staff.
“Having that presence there at the transit stations has actually helped in making our transit officers, making EPS aware of when there were particular problems,” said Ward 1 Coun. Andrew Knack.
In the third quarter of 2018, before security guards were deployed, there were 391 calls for service to the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) Control Centre, according to the report. In the last quarter of 2020, there were 2,298 calls for service. ....

'Radical and dangerous': Doubling costs on Edmonton drivers would encourage transit: report

The suggestion that Edmonton might one day introduce toll roads, drastically hike parking fees, or charge drivers per mile to encourage transit use was denounced as “radical and dangerous” by a city councillor Monday.
“It s radical and it is dangerous, especially with years of economic recovery ahead of us. I have no idea what a congestion tax is, but I m sure it will cost you a lot of money,” Councillor Mike Nickel said in a statement.
“People in this city are just trying to make ends meet, but one cannot help but think City Hall doesn t care about us,” Nickel, who is also running for mayor, added. ....

Downtown-to-Strathcona connector park concept denied funding despite city support

Despite widespread support from city councillors and staff, an ambitious park project that would connect Edmonton’s downtown to Strathcona will not receive funding from the city for now.
The High Level Line Society (HLLS), a non-profit group made up of volunteer Edmontonians, was seeking an $85,000 grant in order to help complete a design study on its proposed 4.3-kilometre green space.
The concept connects MacEwan University to Whyte Avenue using the High Level Bridge, integrating the historic streetcar, and would include pop-up markets and live-performance areas along the route.
“It’s not just about getting from A to B. It’s about the experience,” said Kevin Dieterman, a landscape architect involved in the project. ....
