Most black adults believe religion plays a key role in experience

The majority of black adults in the U.S. believe that to understand the African American experience, it s necessary to understand the role of religious faith in black people s lives, a new study has found.
A Barna survey of 1,083 U.S. black adults, plus 822 black churchgoers, found that four out of five black U.S. adults who align with some type of faith group agree to some extent (41% “strongly,” 38% “somewhat”) that “To understand the African American experience, it is necessary to understand the role of religious faith in the lives of black people.”
Most members of the black church also believe faith is crucial to the black experience, with half (50%) agreeing “strongly” and 38% agreeing “somewhat.” Faith is also considered a source of emotional strength, with nearly all black churchgoers today “strongly” agreeing with this sentiment. ....

(RNS) Most religious Black Americans say understanding the role of religion in the lives of Black people is essential for understanding the African American experience, a new Barna Group survey finds.

YOUNGSTOWN Lit Youngstown will host poets and mystery writers in the next two Sunday readings.
The readings are part of the New Book News series, featuring writers whose books were published during the pandemic lockdown. The readings will be livestreamed on Lit Youngstown’s YouTube channel and are free and open to the public.
On Sunday, Kelli Russell Agodon of Oregon, Erica Bodwell of New Hampshire and Jennifer Jean of Massachusetts will read from and discuss their new books. The program begins at 7 p.m. ....

UMI (Urban Ministries, Inc.) announced that its founder, Dr. Melvin E. Banks, Sr., died on Saturday, February 13, at 86.
So many people have been introduced to the life-changing message of Jesus because of Dr. Banks’ ground-breaking initiatives
Banks launched UMI in 1970 to provide African American churches and individuals with images reflecting their congregations and relatable, Christ-centered content from an urban perspective, according to a release from the company. ....
