PERC to close for maintenance in April - The Ellsworth American

PERC to close for maintenance in April
ORRINGTON The Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. (PERC), which takes in much of the waste from Hancock County and surrounding counties and burns it to generate electricity, will be down for maintenance from April 5 through 25, said Plant Manager Henry Lang, as Versant Power works on the 115,000-volt lead line coming into the plant.
Although PERC can store roughly 10,000 tons of waste in its storage area and on its tipping floor, the rest of the deliveries will be landfilled at Juniper Ridge Landfill while PERC is closed, he said. Lang said waste can’t stay stored for long, however, “since the packed-in waste tends to self-combust if stored too long like wet hay.” ....

At a January 19 presentation to the Municipal Review Committee, the nonprofit that represents 115 Maine municipalities in matters of trash, Rob Van Naarden, CEO of Delta Thermo Energy, described a scene that sounded as if it were from another era.
“As we speak here today, there are barges that are moving from New York City south, outside the 12-mile limit,” he said. “They put them in international waters. All they do is carry sewage sludge from New York City. It used to go to Louisiana to a landfill down there. But recently, a couple of months ago, they refused to take it. And so they’re looking for other places. We eliminate that need.” ....

Buyer Announced for Shuttered Trash Plant – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Anne Berleant (Ellsworth American) Delta Thermo Energy will be the new owner of Coastal Resources of Maine, the waste-to-biofuel facility in Hampden that has had a dramatic, if short, history since opening in April 2019. The facility closed in May of 2019 and was subsequently placed in receivership.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity not only to bring this facility back on line but also to do what’s important to us … making sure nothing goes to a landfill or incinerator going forwards,” Delta Thermo Chief Executive Officer Rob Van Naarden said at a Jan. 19 virtual town hall meeting held by the Municipal Review Committee (MRC). The MRC is a nonprofit coordinating solid waste disposal for member communities. ....
