SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) The San Jose City Council announced Tuesday afternoon that it has selected Anthony Mata as the new chief of police.
According to the city, Mata brings 30 years of law enforcement experience to his role, which he will officially begin on March 22.
Mata began his career with the San Jose Police Department in March 1996 as a police officer. He rose through the ranks of SJPD, recently serving as an executive officer and deputy chief for over four years.
It is the greatest honor of my professional career to lead this great department at this time of needed social and organizational change. I humbly but enthusiastically approach the challenge of guiding and supporting our dedicated workforce while also advocating for our community as we re-imagine community safety together, expressed Chief Mata. ....

Two South Bay civil rights organizations filed a class-action lawsuit Thursday accusing San Jose police of assaulting and illegally arresting at least a dozen people who protested outside City Hall after the Memorial Day 2020 death of George Floyd.

Ten months after thousands of protesters poured onto San Jose streets to protest the police killing of George Floyd, a coalition of civil rights groups are suing the city and its leaders for injuries caused by police.
The lawsuit, filed by the Silicon Valley/San Jose NAACP, nonprofit San Jose Peace and Justice Center and 14 individuals injured in the protests, was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California It names San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, City Manager David Sykes, former Police Chief Eddie Garcia and a few San Jose Police officers as defendants, including Jared Yeun. ....
