John O Donnell, that once stood as a centerpiece in Canton Square, is now gone.Those who lobbied to have it removed said it doesn t fit with their values.Those who worked to have the statue removed said the Canton neighborhood now moves into a new chapter of inclusively.On Monday night, Baltimore City crews removed the statue of O Donnell, who, in 1786, founded Canton as a plantation where he owned slaves. Hundreds of people signed a petition to take down the statue and sent letters to City Hall.“To see it gone and the plaque gone and the podium gone is quite an incredible sight,” Canton Community Association President Mark Edelson said.Edelson led the charge as the president of the Canton Community Association and the chair of the Canton Anti-Racism Alliance.
