Feb. 17 After eight months of discussions, delays and amendments, a City Council committee again faces the question: Should Kansas City limit generous tax incentives long granted to developers?
Many advocates and officials say it s time. But there s little agreement on the latest version of the plan.
Kansas City Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bedell, whose district sees tens of millions of property tax dollars funneled each year to development, says the proposal doesn t go far enough.
The district sees twice as much money per student go to development than any other Kansas City district. The dent on the KCPS budget, compared to majority-white districts north of the Missouri River, is completely inequitable, Bedell told The Star last week. ....

Last week, as she has every week this school year, Kansas City-area teacher Julie Pierce greeted her second graders on Zoom before taking them on a virtual trip to the Arctic for a fast-paced reading lesson.
“Adaptations are things that help them survive,” Pierce explained. “Remember, we wrote, ‘Puffins have thick feathers to help them keep warm.’ So you’re going to be looking for your animal’s adaptations, OK?” ....

Dec. 19 A Kansas City firm that threatened to leave Missouri in an unsuccessful attempt at raking in more taxpayer incentives will now stay put for well over a decade.
Over the summer, BlueScope Construction sought $14 million in state and local incentives to stay at its West Bottoms facility. It said it had received an offer worth some $20 million to hop the state line and move to Kansas.
That request was met with skepticism and outrage particularly because the request came up a year after Kansas and Missouri agreed to stop poaching jobs from each other. ....
