CHESHIRE — The Town Council Ordinance Committee has been meeting regularly to discuss the adoption of a blight ordinance, and Ordinance Committee Chair David Veleber believes a recommendation could be made to the council by summer. 
“We know this is something that Cheshire residents are pretty eager to learn about,” he said. “This is something that the committee has been really working on, and we believe that we are all on the same page about what we want to see.” ....

Holyoke City Council pushes for greater accountability related to grants

On Tuesday, the City Auditor introduced proposed accounting and tracking procedures, especially with problem grant funds.
The order, filed by Councilors David Bartley and Linda Vacon, called for drafting “internal controls on how city grants are to be administered, so that future governments (city taxpayers) are not faced with paying for administrative shortfalls.”
Councilor Joseph McGiverin, who chairs the Finance Committee, has pushed for better accountability from city departments, particularly when seeking reimbursements after a grant expires.
The unpaid reimbursements cause temporary or long-term deficits in the city’s annual budgets. The deficiencies caught the attention of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue’s Local Services Division. ....

Holyoke Ordinance Committee OKs raise for Reserve Police Officers

HOLYOKE – The City Council’s Ordinance Committee voted 5-0 to raise the hourly rate for Reserve Police Officers. The committee held a virtual session Tuesday night.
Councilor Peter Tallman filed an order to increase the current $14.95 for reserve police officers, who supplement regular policing in the city. The committee voted on an $18 hourly rate for the current fiscal year.
Councilor Joseph M. McGiverin said reserve officers “essentially” act as regular officers who are waiting for openings on the Holyoke Police Department.
“While they’re waiting, they’re called upon to work on a per diem basis, doing the same jobs as the police officers next to them in the line of fire,” he said. “The current salary of $14.95 is way too low to ask someone to put a gun on and go out to the streets and perform those duties.” ....
