Library budget concerns for 2021 and fiscal year 2022 have also been addressed. On September 29, Tama Public Library Director Julie Shook filed a complaint with the Iowa Public Information Board (IPIB) alleging the City of Tama violated Iowa Code chapter 21, which sets guidelines for public organizations to conduct open meetings. The complaint came on the heels of the city council voting to cut $50,000 from the library budget at a September council meeting. The budget cut was made to fund two new part-time ambulance positions. It was determined by the council after several budget meetings there was no other place for funding to be cut to allow for the positions. The council had previously approved the hiring of part-time help as they were struggling to get EMS volunteers to cover shifts. ....

The positions were created to support the continued growth of Deimco Finishing Equipment. A proposal to purchase the lot at 806 State Street for $50,000 has been received from National Retail Development, LLC, a Chicago-based developer. School board president, Penny Tyynismaa indicated during Monday’s regular school board meeting that, pending the sale, the intended use of the lot would be to construct a new Family Dollar retail store. Following a brief discussion, the board voted 5-0 to set a public hearing on Monday, Feb 1 for the sale of the school property. The hearing will provide an opportunity for community members to express their approval or displeasure in the property sale. ....

Development with Tama’s downtown pocket park continued a few steps further this month. At their regular meeting on Dec. 21 the Tama City Council approved the purchase of four park benches to be installed at the small city park in the 200 block of W 3rd Street. The benches will be part of an upcoming pocket park development effort made possible by a $9,509.57 grant from the Mansfield Charitable Foundation, awarded to the city of Tama in August. ....
