Kalona Issues Drinking Water Advisory for Infants


The City of Kalona issued a drinking water health advisory due to high manganese levels Wednesday.
Residents are asked to not give tap water to infants under six months old or use it to make infant formula. Sample results received showed manganese levels of .347 milligrams per liter. This is above the Environmental Protection Agency’s short-term health advisory of .3 milligrams per liter for infants under six months old. Manganese is a naturally occurring element found in soil, water, and air. Our bodies require small amounts of manganese to stay healthy, but too much can increase the risk of health problems, particularly for infants under six months old. Residents should use bottled water or alternative sources of water for infants. Boiling, freezing, or letting water does not reduce manganese, and boiling can actually increase manganese levels. ....

After receiving what City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh called “overwhelming financial support” for the city’s pop-up pantries, the City of Kalona is looking to expand their food offering program to cater directly to seniors.
For some seniors, the boxes provided at the city’s previous pop-up pantries have been too much food the boxes have been heavy and full of items that not all seniors can necessarily use. For that reason, the city hopes to create food bags that can be delivered to seniors’ homes. These bags would contain less in quantity but could possibly contain some perishable items, such as milk and fruit. ....
