Pamplin Media Group - Opinion: We must restore our city, and become the new Eden

April 02 2021 The Rev. Dr. Chuck Currie of Northeast Portland is a minister in the United Church of Christ. Portland has been home most of my life. Our family moved here when I was 10. At 18, I joined the Burnside Community Council board, kicking off a life in social services and ministry that has covered three decades and six Portland mayors. All these years, I ve been in a lover s quarrel with Portland, demanding more housing and attention to civil rights to make Portland a better home for all. At 52, like many Portlanders, I m dismayed where we are as a city and wondering if Portland, with all the Rose City has to offer, will become the new Eden, or are we on a path to becoming the new Gotham. You might be surprised to learn I m still hopeful about our future.

Pamplin Media Group - PF&R: Deadly RV fire in Southeast Portland shows concerning trend

March 17 2021 Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty said Tuesday s fire means the City Council must approve more homeless shelters. A person and a dog were killed in a recreational vehicle fire early Tuesday morning. Firefighters responded to the fire behind the Shalamar Apartments on Southeast Powell Boulevard around 2 a.m. on March 16. Another person and a dog who were in the vehicle escaped injury. Portland Fire & Rescue said the fire was started by improper use of a propane heater used to keep the vehicle s occupants warm. Six such fires have happened so far this year, PF&R said. At one point, firefighters were getting called out to three or four tent fires each day. Last month, a man died after being severely burned in a tent fire in Portland s Piedmont neighborhood. Investigators said the blaze likely came from a propane heating device.

North Miami COVID-19 relief announced by CRA

North Miami residents and businesses facing financial hardship will be able to apply for a boost. The board of the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMCRA) just approved $1 million of its annual funding to be distributed as COVID-19 relief grants. Of that amount, $500,000 will go toward supporting business; the other half will cover housing and utility costs for residents. Charged with the responsibility of eliminating obstacles that impede the city’s economic, physical and social development, the NMCRA thought it best to provide additional financial assistance to its vulnerable populations and has tasked two nonprofits with administering the assistance. The Haitian Chamber of Commerce of Florida (HACCOF) and the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce (GNMCC), trained by NMCRA to facilitate the application process, have opened their offices as designated pickup and drop-off locations for the applications.
