Twin Cities Salvation Army school supply drive in motion

The Twin Cities Salvation Army just started its annual back-to-school drive. The drive collects backpacks and school supplies for children whose parents are facing financial challenges.
The demand is big: students need supplies from pencils to markers and rulers, as well as calculators, crayons and backpacks to prepare for the upcoming school year. Plus, it ll be a different school year for many children.
Last year we didn t get it done because of COVID, but this year, the kids are all going back to school this fall, and so we want to help families out with supplies for their kids to go back to school,  Maj. Scott Shelbourn, general secretary and Twin Cities commander of the Salvation Army, said. ....

Salvation Army launches 2 million pound food drive in Twin Cities

The Salvation Army is holding a 2 million pound food drive in the Twin Cities.
(FOX 9) - The Twin Cities Salvation Army announced it is holding a two million pound food drive from March 1-26 in an effort to aid families still struggling from the economic impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a release from the organization, the goal of collecting 2 million pounds of non-perishable food would represent the largest single food drive ever held in the Twin Cities.
More than 750,000 Minnesotans have experienced job furloughs or layoffs since the start of the pandemic, and the state s food shelves have seen a record 3.83 million visits. The Salvation Army also reports 40% of people visiting their food pantries last year had never visited one before. ....

MINNEAPOLIS When talking about 2020, the word unprecedented comes up a lot. It s even Dictionary.com s People s Choice 2020 Word of the Year. For as much as the word was used in 2020, it truly describes what many Minnesota nonprofits are experiencing. 
Unprecedented need. It has been a continual increase since the start of the pandemic, said Jonathan Palmer, executive director for Hallie Q. Brown Community Center. 
Hallie Q. Brown Community Center has seen a dramatic rise in food shelf clients, as well as families needing help with childcare and education. The 91-year-old African American social service agency is open to all, located in St. Paul s Rondo neighborhood.  ....

The Twin Cities Salvation Army says it s Christmas fundraising drive is $700,000 down compared to last year, with its Red Kettle campaign struggling as more shoppers stayed at home.
The Roseville-based organization issued a statement reminding people that donations it receives through the end of the month will be matched up to $1 million thanks to several anonymous donors.
Its customary Christmas Red Kettle campaign has taken a hit this year due to the pandemic. Red Kettle donations are commonly taken outside of grocery and other retail stores, but more people than ever are choosing to have their purchases delivered or picked up curbside. ....
