RAD card program helps give money to San Joaquin County businesses, customers


San Joaquin County has launched a relief program that both helps businesses bring in more money and the customers have more to spend while shopping. The RAD Card, or Relief Across Downtown Card, was first launched in Modesto by the Downtown Modesto Partnership. The goal of the smartphone app is to help small businesses in the area that have struggled financially due to the pandemic.Customers can download the smartphone app, choose the community where they would like to spend their money and select the amount they wish to spend in $25 increments, up to $100. The county then matches the funds, dollar-for-dollar. The customer will then have double what they paid to spend at participating businesses. There are no strings attached, and it s a first-come, first-serve basis. The county has set aside $1,000,000 for this program. San Joaquin County customers can now have their money doubled when spending at local businesses.
The RAD Gift Card program will match funds up to $100 when loaded onto a digital gift card via the program s app. Nearly 50 local businesses in Manteca, Ripon, Stockton, Tracy and Lodi have signed up to participate. 
Many businesses across the state have taken a substantial financial hit due to COVID-19 restrictions after California largely shutdown last March to help slow the spread of the virus.

Modesto parklets add seating, curb appeal to downtown area


Parklets have been constructed in downtown Modesto to add seating, and small business owners hope more revenue.The parklets can currently be found on and around J Street. Deva Café s parklet was recently constructed. Owner Heather Elkins took over the cafe in July of 2020, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first few months it was just no indoor seating at all, then it was outdoor, but there was the fires, Elkins said.Despite the rough start, Elkins said she knew the café is where she belonged. It s been a staple of downtown Modesto and I didn t want to see it close and become something else, Elkins said.The parklets may help her cafe even more. It s definitely picking up.
