Downtown Greens, a community garden in downtown Fredericksburg, has submitted a letter of intent to the Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority to purchase the property adjacent to Braehead Farm in the city s Battlefield Industrial Park. Sarah Perry, Downtown Greens director, said she and board members toured the property earlier this spring and submitted their letter of intent to the EDA on April 7. She said the organization sees buying the property as an opportunity to expand its programming in the areas of sustainable agriculture, environmental education and land conservation. We started getting really excited and talking to people who might partner with us to expand [our operation] in this way, she said. We realized that there is a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of people who are interested in saving this piece of propertyâand not just saving it but turning it into this new, beautiful space that the whole community can enjoy. ....
When Fredericksburg City Public Schools first put together a Family and Community Engagement Committee back in 2018, its goal was to bring more families into school buildings to volunteer and participate in their childrenâs education. âAll that has changed because of COVID-19,â said Sandra Gillenwater, supervisor of community engagement and elementary programs for the city school division. Since last summer, the committee and its related subcommittees have been trying to meet the needs of a school community separated by the pandemic. âFrom the onset, [those needs] havenât changed very much,â Gillenwater said. âAt the very beginning, [the need was for] technology. Since then, itâs been food and meals and as time has gone on, weâre seeing a lot of concerns about clothing, especially cold-weather clothing.â ....
