ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -Representation from Albany Police, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Dougherty County Police, Albany State University (ASU) Police, Albany Tech Police, and the Dougherty County District Attorney were all part of a Police Community Relations Workshop at ASU.
These officials took the hot seat on some hot topics Tuesday night.
During part of the event, Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said, “police and community are not different. They’re one and the same. So the simplest form of community policing is a neighborhood watch.”

New cadet program coming to Dougherty Co.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Dougherty County Sheriffâs Office is working to create a new cadet program across the county.
Dougherty County Sheriff Kevin Sproul said they are starting the cadet program in high schools this year.
They will be meeting kids in the classroom, asking if theyâve decided on a career and if theyâve considered law enforcement.
âWith our cadet program, weâre actually going to bring kids and run them through forensics, run them through the pistol range, run them through vehicle pull over and let them learn all about what an officer does,â explained Sproul.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Ward OneCity Commissioner Jon Howard says kids are the future of the city, so he donated money to the Albany-Dougherty youth unit.
last week, city commissioners told Albany Police Department that itâs not in their budget right now to assist the programs with government funding.
But Commissioner Howard said if commissioners and law enforcement donât get a hold of the kids now, then they will find trouble now or in the future.
