Federal and local authorities were working Sunday to tow away a dead gray whale that washed up on the Pacifica State Beach shore Friday afternoon, officials said.
Officials at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito said they received a report of a dead whale rolling in the surf at Pacifica State Beach at about 3 p.m. Friday. It was the 12th dead whale to wash up on a San Francisco Bay Area beach this year, according to authorities. ....

3 More Dead Gray Whales Found in San Francisco Bay: Marine Mammal Center

The most recent whales won t have their causes of death determined because of inaccessible or unsafe locations, and the Marine Mammal Center is in talks with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration about possibly safely towing the whale carcasses into the open ocean so they can naturally decompose there.
Over the last few years, our experts have observed gray whales frequenting San Francisco Bay in greater numbers and for longer periods of time. These whales are at increased risk from human activity, which is why we are committed to better understanding the ongoing challenges and threats these animals face, Kathi George, the center s director of field operations and response, said in a statement. ....

Tsunami warning: Residents who evacuated coastal Bay of Plenty towns and Northland can return home

Bay of Plenty District Health Board emergency operation s controller Brent Gilbert-De Rios said they did not have to evacuate patients from Whakatāne Hospital as they were outside the flood zone.
However, the hospital’s Tsunami Plan was implemented and patients and staff in the hospital were relocated to the first floor of the Dawson Block on the hospital campus.
In Northland, resident Rosie Stone, who has lived in the Helena Bay area for 30 years, said she had never had a warning “quite as dramatic as this”.
She got the civil defence warning on her phone and just grabbed her dog and phone and drove to higher ground. ....

Massive crocodile stuns onlookers by getting stuck on a ferry cable in Queensland

A massive saltwater crocodile has shocked onlookers after popping up next to a ferry cable.
The imposing reptile, estimated to be at least three metres long, was spotted and filmed by locals next to the large cable on the Daintree River, in Far North Queensland.
At one stage, the crocodile s head was clearly visible to shocked witnesses at the scene.
He eventually submerged back into the water below.
