THE FIGHT continues for improved facilities at an allotment site which plot holders say are like the ‘caveman times’. Plot holders at the Mill Lane Allotments site in Connah’s Quay say they have been calling for better site security and toilet facilities for years, but are still ‘fighting a losing battle’. Despite saying they will raise the funds themselves, they still need council permission for the works to take place. Bill Crease, chair of the allotment association, told the Leader: “I wrote to the council and asked their permission. I specifically said we don’t want them to fun the projects but can we have written permission they will let the works go ahead. ....
VOLUNTEERS have dug deep to support a community gardening project following a spate of vandalism during lockdown. Digging Deeside thanked the team from Mill Lane Allotment Association, based in Connah’s Quay, for helping to replant and replace flowers and tidy up their site after a series of break-ins. The team was left devastated after lockdown brought on more hardship thanks to a spate of criminal activity. A greenhouse was smashed and items stolen, to the disappointment of Sarah Way, facilitator at Digging Deeside, part of the Rainbow BIZ CIC initiative. The horticulture scheme supports vulnerable and marginalised members of the local area, promoting good health, mindfulness, and green issues. ....
A NORTH Wales social enterprise has been awarded a grant to help the most vulnerable stay connected. RainbowBiz CIC has been given £10,000 by the Steve Morgan Foundation to help some of the most marginalised members of the community during the Covid-19 pandemic. This multi-award winning social enterprise has been reaching out to those people it supports in many different ways for the last 10 months, due to the impact of the Covid crisis. Initial weekly contact was made via telephone calls and text messages to some of the most vulnerable members of the community but very quickly, RainbowBiz moved their projects and social gatherings online via Zoom, where people have been encouraged to join in regular weekly quizzes and have a chance to catch up and socialise together. ....
