RESIDENTS in a rural Radnorshire village are raging over the “brutal” tree-felling programme which they say is ruining the local landscape and endangering wildlife. People living in and near the village of Dolau were left angry and stunned last week when maple, oak, ash and sycamore trees – some more than 100-years-old – were suddenly chopped down as part of a “resilience cutting” by Western Power. The electricity distribution network operator said the tree-felling was part of a programme to “improve the electricity network performance under abnormal weather conditions” that Powys has been experiencing in recent weeks. But locals are far from happy and have called a public meeting later this week. They say many of the trees are in leaf and are being scythed down during peak nesting time for local birds; that they act to maintain a river bank on a flood plain and that Western Power’s policy “makes a mockery” of any protection for the environment ....
PUPILS past, present and even future at a primary school in a thriving rural Radnorshire community have made an emotional video hoping to save it from closure. In the three-minute, 52-second video, generations of pupils who’ve attended Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Primary School in the tiny village of Dolau are filmed initially catching and then passing on a green/turquoise-coloured school jumper. The jumper is a symbol of the school being passed down among the generations, with the heart-warming video set to the song ‘This Is Me’ by Kesha. At the end of the video, the youngest current pupil is seen receiving the jumper as she stands in the middle of a green-shaped heart formed by fellow learners in a field. ....
FAMILY, friends and colleagues will gather to celebrate the life of jockey Lorna Brooke later this month. A celebration of Lorna’s life will be held at Ludlow Racecourse during and immediately after racing on Monday, May 24. Amateur jockey Lorna, 37, was riding Orchestrated for her mother, Lady Susan Brooke, who is based in Dolau, near Llandrindod Wells, when she fell at the third fence in the Pontispool Equine Sports Centre Handicap Chase in Taunton on April 8. Racing was delayed by more than hour as she was treated on track, before being transferred into an air ambulance. Lorna was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for observation and tests on a suspected spinal injury. After complications she was placed in an induced coma the following day. She died 10 days later on April 19. ....

A private funeral service will be held on 5th May 2021. A celebration of her life will be held at Ludlow Racecourse on 24th May 2021, due to current regulations anyone wishing to attend will require to pre book by calling Ludlow Racecourse.
