NNY Q&A: Watertown's Sci-Tech Museum executive director talks mission, pandemic and the future | Top Stories

Stephen A. Karon, executive director for the Sci-Tech Museum of Northern New York, has worked for over a decade furthering the mission of the nonprofit founded in 1983, set on helping the public gain a better understanding of science and technology. While the COVID-19 pandemic may have slowed things down, the mission hasnât changed, and the museum has adapted with the times. Mr. Karon spoke with NNY Business magazine to discuss the museum, his role with it and how he came to be there, as well as plans for the future.

Technology Alliance hosting Saturday program for middle schoolers

The program is designed for middle school students.
Preregistration is free but required at tinyurl.com/arctictech The featured speaker is Melissa Chipman, professor of earth sciences, Syracuse University. She will focus on the Arctic , an interesting landscape with its own unique habitats.
The program will take a look at history from the lens of a bug in mud, exploring lake-sediment cores to investigate the past and uncover how Arctic ecosystems have responded to changing climate over thousands of years.
Ms. Chipman received her bachelorâs degree in environmental geosciences from Concord University in West Virginia. She received a M.S in Geology. and a Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She was also a postdoctoral research fellow at Northwestern University and joined the faculty in Earth Sciences at Syracuse University in January 2019. ....

Technology Alliance to host "Storm Team" meteorologist for online presentation | Education

WATERTOWN â The Sci-Tech Center, 154 Stone St., invites students to take part in a meteorology program specifically designed for middle school pupils.
The online âJunior Cafe Scientifiqueâ program, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, will feature the topic âWeather Patterns Over Time: Climate Change Explained,â featuring Jim Teske, Syracuseâs NewsChannel 9 chief meteorologist.
This is a free online presentation requiring registration. Confirmation and a reminder will be emailed to participants.
Junior Cafe Scientifique is presented by TACNY, the Technology Alliance of Central New York, which has been providing free public presentations on issues of science and technology for more than 100 years.
Mr. Teske will talk about climate change and historical data over time. He will also discuss what climate change is, from a meteorological perspective, and analyze the most recent data trends in national and international weather patterns. ....
