Women's experiences show the promise of social mobility is empty


TODAY “social mobility” is a synonym for fairness and meritocracy in many Western societies. 
There are all kinds of flaws with this as a project and they become abundantly clear when we consider women’s experiences. 
By examining women’s lives across the past century, we see the need to fight for a more egalitarian society and for true liberation not just a few more black or female faces in our ruling class.
The sociologist John Goldthorpe set the parameters for how mobility is measured and understood back in the early 1970s. 
Goldthorpe argued that mobility could be measured between a father’s class at the age of about 35, and his son’s class in adulthood.   ....

International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention C190 and its relevance in Bangladesh

The ILO Convention Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) and its accompanying Recommendation (R206) went through a long process and it culminated in the adoption of the convention in the ILO Centenary Conference in 2019. The Bangladesh government voted in favour of the adoption of the Convention C190 and Recommendation R206 and we are optimistic about the ratification of C190 by the government of Bangladesh. Workers and Employers organisation need to engage to discuss the convention s ratification and figure out how it can be integrated into the national system through legislation to improve practices in addressing workplace violence and harassment.. Without addressing issues around violence and harassment, including GBV in the world of work, it is impossible to achieve the Decent Work Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ....

Thomas Bewick
The wood-engraver was born in Mickley, near Prudhoe, in 1753 and became famous for his engravings of natural scenes.
He is best known for his A History of British Birds and for his illustrated editions of Aesop’s Fables throughout his life. His admirers included the poets Wordsworth and Tennyson, and the novelist Charlotte Bronte.
The work of Bewick is celebrated at the Cherryburn National Trust site - located at his birthplace - and there is a bust at the location of his former workshop behind Newcastle Cathedral. ....
