Dominion plans to move coal ash at Bremo to lined landfill – Fluvanna Review

Dominion Power held a public meeting at the Fork Union Community Center on Thursday night (April 29) to provide an update on its plans for the 6.2 million cubic feet of coal ash stored at their Bremo facility.
About a dozen residents, masked and socially distanced, attended the meeting.
The toxic ash, a byproduct of Bremo’s eight decades as a coal-fired power plant, is currently stored in what’s called the North Ash Pond near the now-idle facility. Because this pond has no bottom liner, toxic material and heavy metals can potentially leach into the groundwater and the nearby James River. ....

Supervisors eye budget and tax rates – Fluvanna Review

The Board of Supervisors met on Wednesday night (April 14) for public hearings on the FY21 budget and the tax rates.
PUBLIC HEARINGS
“This year was a pretty amazing year for reassessments,” said management analyst Liz McIver. Real estate assessments rose 6.87 percent.
The real estate tax rate in the adopted FY21 budget was $0.925 per $100 in assessed value. For FY22, the proposed rate was $0.92 and supervisors have advertised a rate of $0.884. McIver calculated the equalized tax rate at $0.865.
Under state law, the county was required to hold a public hearing because the reassessment resulted in an increase of one percent or greater in the total property tax levied. ....

Fluvanna County staff to get bonuses – Fluvanna Review

The Fluvanna Board of Supervisors met on Thursday (Dec. 17) after adjourning its Wednesday meeting due to the ice storm. County Administrator Eric Dahl thanked Fire & Rescue, E-911, VDOT, and both the Lake Monticello Police Department and maintenance department for so quickly clearing the roads of downed trees and debris in the aftermath of the storm.
Staff bonuses
One of the biggest items on the agenda was a state-mandated bonus for sworn sheriffs, deputies, and regional jail officers whose salaries are funded in part by the Virginia Compensation Board. At its special session in the fall, the legislature voted to approve a $500 bonus for those positions and gave localities the funding to cover the payment. ....
