Philipose Mar Chrysostom, former head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and the longest-serving bishop in India, died of age-related ailments on Wednesday, a church spokesperson said. He was 104.
Mar Chrysostom had been discharged from a medical college hospital in Thiruvalla on Tuesday. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Kumbanad near Thiruvalla at 1.15am, the spokesperson said.
Mar Chrysostom had celebrated his 104th birthday a week ago on April 27 while undergoing treatment at Medical College Hospital. His funeral will be held on Thursday.
A religious dignitary with a genuine humanitarian outlook and global vision, Mar Chrysostom was awarded the Padma Bhushan by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2018.

He was regarded as the world’s longest serving bishop who served for about 68 years. Dr.Philipose Mar Christostm, Metropolitan Emeritus of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian church , passed away on Wednesday. He was 104.
Official sources said the Metropolitan Emeritus was ailing for a while and passed away at a private hospital in Kumaband around 1.15 a.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday.

THIRUVALLA: Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, the emeritus Metropolitan of the Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church passed away at Kumbanad Fellowship Hospital on Wednesday. The 104 year old Metropolitan was the senior most metropolitan of any Christian denomination in the world and the country had honoured him with Padma Bhushan award in 2018.
Mar Chrysostom Valiya Matropolitan had celebrated his birthday on April 27 at a private medical college at Tiruvalla. He was admitted to the hospital following urinary infection and had tested Covid positive. However he later tested negative and was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. KOTTAYAM: The longest-serving Bishop of the country, Philipose Mar Chrysostom of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian church, passed away at the age of 103 at a private hospital in Pathanamthitta in the wee hours of Wednesday.
For the last few years he has been residing at a hospital owned by the church in Kumbanad.
He served as a Bishop for 68 years which is a record in the Indian church.
He was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvalla after his health deteriorated on April 23. He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after he regained health.
The funeral will be held at the special cemetery for bishops at the church headquarters in Thiruvalla at 3pm on Thursday.
