Ghaziabad: Commuters driving from Delhi to Meerut will get the first full expressway experience beginning Thursday when the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) opens the remaining two of the four phases of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) to traffic for a trial run. If one is using the access-controlled lanes of the expressway the six middle lanes, three on either side the 82km drive from Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut will take under an hour. Earlier, the drive between the two cities used to take at least two hours. The formal inauguration of the expressway will, however, take place in about two months.

Bombay HC seeks Centre s response on PIL against FASTag system

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the Union government to file an affidavit in response to a PIL challenging the decision of making FASTag, India s electronic toll collection chip for national highways, mandatory for all vehicles at toll plazas. A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni was hearing the public interest litigation (PIL) filed last week by one Arjun Khanapure, challenging the decision to make provision of toll payment through FASTag mandatory at all toll plazas across the country. The court directed the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to file its affidavit and posted the matter for hearing on March 17.
