Government of Canada announces recipients of $100-million Feminist Response and Recovery Fund

OTTAWA, ON, July 29, 2021 /CNW/ - Advancing gender equality is a key priority for the Government of Canada. The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified systemic and longstanding inequalities, with women and girls disproportionately impacted by the crisis. Women have faced job losses and reduced work hours, shouldered the majority of the additional unpaid care responsibilities at home, and continue to be on the front lines of the pandemic. As Canada moves towards an inclusive recovery, meaningful progress to advance gender equality is needed now more than ever to ensure no one is left behind.
To further support critical recovery efforts led by the women s and equality-seeking movement, today the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, announced 237 projects to receive funding under the $100 million Feminist Response and Recovery Fund call for proposals.  ....

Memorial walk for victims of residential school system hosted by St. Albert Indigenous community

The Indigenous community in St. Albert gathered together Sunday for the pekîwewak awâsisak Children are Coming Home walk.
The event started in front of St. Albert Place with a welcome and blessing before gathering community members for a walk to The Children’s Bridge. A ceremony led by First Nations, Inuit, and Metis community members and elders took place at The Healing Garden.
Maureen Callihoo-Ligtvoet, program coordinator at the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women, told CTV News Edmonton that the event was organized by the local Indigenous community with the support of the City of St. Albert. ....

Alberta, Canada – Alsena White, aged 67, is illiterate. She gets by with the help of her children and grandchildren.
Alsena was taught at the Blue Quills Indian Residential School near St Paul, Alberta. From the age of five to 16, she lived at the federal government-funded school, ushered through grade after grade. Yet no one seemed to notice – or to care – that she could neither read nor write.
“[To them] I was just another Indian,” she says of the Catholic nuns and priests who administered her education. Leaning slightly forward, as if to make sure it is safe to speak, Alsena continues: “I tell people I spent 10 years in jail even though I never committed a crime.” ....
