Oregon Bill May Help Prevent HIV/AIDS - The Corvallis Advocate

Oregon Bill May Help Prevent HIV/AIDS May 7, 2021 Although for the past year the world’s mind has been on a new pandemic, there is an older one which still affects many people globally. A new bill proposed in Oregon aims to increase access to preventative medicine by changing requirements for insurance companies.   House Bill 2958 would allow pharmacists to prescribe and administer preventative HIV medicine, and require that insurance cover such a prescription in the same way as one from a physician.   Currently the law says that pharmacists “may be” reimbursed for these medical services. According to the Oregon State Pharmacy Association though, most insurers either don’t reimburse pharmacists or do so on a very low pay level. This bill would require insurers to cover the drugs and administration without prior authorization, to the same degree as outlined in their normal benefits.

It s A Sin was genius, HIV activists like me were shunned

“Colin in It’s A Sin resonated with me a lot for that reason. I was quiet like that – unassuming. “When I found Terry, I very much felt as though I had found a treasure.” In It’s A Sin, Colin – who is the opposite of promiscuous [as the media often depicted gay men at the time, and since] – dies after contracting the virus. Roscoe, a lively and promiscuous drag queen who loves a party, doesn’t get HIV. “There were many Colins,” Mr Butler said. “That’s perhaps one of the most heart-breaking things of that time.” Not long after Terry died Mr Butler’s ex-partner also died aged 22.

Mark Fisher, supporting the rights and health of those living with HIV

Fisher grew up on a farm in the country town of Rockbank, about 30 kilometres from metropolitan Melbourne, one of only a handful of students at the small local school. He later attended Melbourne High School before undertaking a computer science degree at RMIT (formerly the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology). Though it originated decades earlier, HIV/Aids was sweeping the world in the 1980s and early 1990s. Misinformation and homophobia were rife. Aids was labelled the “gay plague”, and initially named “Gay Related Immune Deficiency”. The spectre loomed large. In 1987-88, when Fisher came out while at university, the ‘Grim Reaper’ ad campaign screened on Australian televisions, showing the personification of death bowling – knocking over men, women and children.
