December 29, 2020 Last night, the 2020 WSOP Main Event domestic tournament finished up at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The first portion of the event took place online and then eight players headed to the casino to play out the tournament live. A total of 705 players competed in the event. In the end, it was Joseph Hebert who won the tournament, securing a spot against the international winner Damian Salas in the head-to-head matchup. This year, the Main Event is a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. GGPoker hosted an online event and then a live final table at King’s Casino in the Czech Republic. The WSOP also hosted an online event in New Jersey and Nevada, with the final table playing out at the Rio. The winners of each event will now battle to see who the Main Event Champion will be. ....
2020 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $10,000 Main Event on WSOP.com attracted 705 players who played down to a final table of nine. Today, those players return to action, minus three-time bracelet winner Upeshka De Silva, who was deemed ineligible to proceed with participation after reportedly testing positive for COVID-19 (published rules stated that any player who tested positive would be disqualified and receive ninth-place money of $98,813). The other eights players are at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino ready to battle it out for a $1,553,256 top prize, which also provides them the opportunity to compete for an additional $1 million and the gold bracelet in a heads-up showdown against the winner of the GGPoker international portion of the WSOP. The runner-up will also become a poker millionaire as $1,002,340 is set aside for second place. ....
De Silva Reveals All De Silva explained more about the situation in a series of follow-up tweets, with the three-time bracelet-winner explaining that he had been quarantining since Dec. 10 but ultimately tested positive on Dec. 20. The following day, he immediately reached out to WSOP Vice President Jack Effel (pictured). The two discussed the situation, and Effel asked De Silva whether he had tested himself that day. De Silva had not, leading Effel to say that he d see De Silva on Sunday, Dec. 27 for the compulsory final table tests. De Silva said that he felt very scared and was worried about going public with the situation. Although testing negative on Saturday, Dec. 26, a positive result at the official test the following day led to his apparent disqualification. ....
