Afternoon downpour causes flooding in parts of Taipei

Taipei, June 4 (CNA) Heavy downpours brought by a plum rain front and the approaching Tropical Storm Choi-Wan caused severe flooding in many parts of Taipei on Friday afternoon.
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said the districts of Da an, Wenshan, Nangang, Neihu and Xinyi had already accumulated more than 100 mm of rainfall, and some had even seen over 200 mm of rain.
The city government said the downpours have caused knee-deep flooding in areas around Bojia Elementary School and Muzha Road in Wenshan District, as well as near Zhongxiao East Road in Xinyi District in the area surrounding the Zhongxiao fire station.

Doctors yesterday called on first responders to care for their mental health and watch for signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as rescuers continue to handle the aftermath of Friday’s train derailment in Hualien County.
The crash was the nation’s worst rail tragedy in decades, killing 50 and injuring 200 as of yesterday after the Hualien District Prosecutors’ Office revised the death toll down from 51 following DNA testing.
Taroko Express No. 408 was traveling from New Taipei City to Taitung when it crashed inside the Cingshuei Tunnel (清水隧道) in Hualien’s Sioulin Township (秀林) after hitting a crane truck that had slid down onto the tracks from a nearby work site.

Taipei, April 2 (CNA) Local police are questioning the driver of a crane truck that is believed to have slid down a hillside and blocked the path of a moving train heading south in Hualien County on Friday, leading to an accident that caused the deaths of at least 48 people.
The driver, surnamed Lee (李), was still being questioned by Chungte police as of 4 p.m. Friday, according to the Xincheng Precinct of the Hualien County Police Department.
