New look for services this year, but Metro Detroiters committed to honoring King s legacy Southfield  When it comes to honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Neely Allen believes it s important to not hang with her friends but to take the opportunity to stand for justice. So on this brisk Monday morning, the 16-year-old sat in the back seat of a vehicle driven by her mom, waiting to give thanks for King s ultimate sacrifice for civil rights for Black Americans on a national holiday in his honor. Keeping Our Community Warm is a helping outreach program in Canton

CANTON  The Scriptures say the poor will always be among us, but Audrey Walker says that doesn t mean we shouldn t do all we can to help others in need. It prompted the North Canton resident and a team of her friends and family to launch Keeping Our Community Warm, a giveaway on the streets on Wednesday. Walker spearheaded the distribution of 250 Christmas bags containing toiletries and personal care items, hats and gloves. This is the only Christmas some of them will have, she said. The group stationed themselves outside of the Stark District Library, the Canton YWCA,  ICAN, Sunset Vista Behavioral Hospital, McDonald s and the Domestic Violence Project, where they also gave away toys.
