Texas to get $45 billion in federal COVID relief money


With nine weeks left in the legislative session, lawmakers responsible for drafting the state budget still have unanswered questions about the latest rounds of federal coronavirus relief, including when those funds will be released to the state.
Texas received roughly $11 billion in federal funding from the first coronavirus relief package approved by Congress last year
$3 billion in direct aid to local governments and $8 billion to the state. all of which has been spent or earmarked.
Through the December and March fiscal coronavirus packages, Texas stands to receive an additional $45 billion: $17 billion for the state, $18 billion for schools and $10 billion for qualifying cities and counties. ....

Flickr / Ed Schipul Texas lawmakers will enter the legislative session this week with an estimated $112.5 billion available to allocate for general purpose spending in the next two-year state budget, a number that s down slightly from the current budget but is significantly higher than what was estimated this summer when the coronavirus began to devastate the economy.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar on Monday announced that number in his biennial revenue estimate, which sets the amount lawmakers can commit to spending ....
