Group set up to fight for flood protection


A NEW community group has been set up in Norton to fight for better flood alleviation to protect homes and businesses from repeated sewer flooding.
Norton Against Sewage (NAgS) has been set up by residents in Derwent Terrace, Church Street and St Nicholas Street and aims to push the bodies responsible for flood prevention to put in a place a permanent solution to the sewer flooding that they experienced again in February 2021.
Cllr Di Keal, whose Norton West ward is directly impacted by sewer flooding, said: What residents urgently need is the flood partnership authorities to contribute to solutions not more surveys. T ....

Calls for £2.5m of flood funding


A CALL for £2.5million of urgent funding from Ryedale District Council (RDC) is to be put forward to help tackle flooding problems.
In a motion to be presented at the next RDC Full Council meeting on February 17, Norton councillor Di Keal will ask for the money to be set aside from the council’s £16 million reserves and for council officers to enter into immediate negotiations with Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and North Yorkshire County Council to deliver on a scheme that was dropped last year.
Cllr Keal said: “The level of flooding we have seen over the last week is the biggest faced by people in Norton, Malton and Old Malton since the major flood alleviation scheme was built in 2000. ....

'Heroic efforts' help avert major flooding disaster


ALL those involved in last night s battle to prevent significant flooding in Norton and Malton have been thanked for their efforts.
Cllr Keane Duncan said: Decisive action in face of the emergency has been able to prevent the significant and widespread flooding feared last night. The plan put into action to deploy pumps and sandbags to the Wallgates Lane area has worked effectively. Its success reflects the hard work, perseverance and resourcefulness of all the workers involved. A big well done to staff from Ryedale District Council,
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and the Environment Agency.
The gravity of the situation last night, though, can not be underestimated. I saw first hand the work on the ground that prevented the worse case scenario from occurring and just how tough it was for everyone involved. This period has been the most challenging for us since the flood defences were put in. ....

Residents on a knife-edge as River Derwent expected to peak at 5.1 metres


RESIDENTS in Malton and Norton are on a knife-edge this evening as the they continue to battle against the rising flood water.
The River Derwent is currently 4.96 metres and is due to peak at 5.1metres in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
County Bridge is currently closed to vehicles and pedestrains.Norton Road is only accessible by foot.
Ryedale District Council is continuing to work with the agencies of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum (NYLRF) to respond to the flooding situation affecting parts of the district.
Councillor Keane Duncan, Leader of Ryedale District Council, said: “We are working closely with our partners including North Yorkshire County Council, Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service to deliver a multi-agency response across Ryedale including the ongoing management of the Malton, Norton and Old Malton Pump Plan for Malton, Norton and Old Malton. ....
