All of humanity emerged from a rock on my family’s rice field. This is what I was taught. The field, though small, boasts a perennial spring which comes out from below the rock that is the source of all of humanity, keeping the field permanently flooded and amenable for growing rice. The first time I descended down the stone terraces from the village to the field, my aunties and uncles showed me where to place my hands on the rock to feel the polished grooves where, they say, the first people stepped and climbed up into the world, in what is now our small rice field.

Kohima: Nagaland chief secretary Temjen Toy passed away on Thursday evening at his residence in Kohima after a brief illness, family sources said.
He was 57 and survived by wife and four children.
Toy, a 1989-batch IAS officer, took charge as the chief secretary of Nagaland in March 2018.
He was diagnosed with a liver problem in mid-2020 and was under constant medication.
GUWAHATI: Nagaland chief secretary Temjen Toy passed away on Thursday afternoon at his residence in Kohima after battling for long with cancer. Toy is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
The 57-year-old was a 1989 batch IAS officer and had taken charge as the chief secretary of the state in March 2018.
He was suffering from lung cancer and in his last tweet on October 30 he posted his new profile as Healing in Process.
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio tweeted, “I am extremely saddened at the passing away of @temjentoy, Chief Secretary of Nagaland. He was a humble, upright and dedicated government servant. His death is a huge loss for the Govt. of Nagaland & for the Nagas as a whole. Heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul RIP.”
