Italpress 27 Maggio 2021 LA VALLETTA (ITALPRESS/MNA) – Malta has avoided the danger of being grey listed by the Council of Europès anti-money laundering body after making “significant progress” in fighting money-laundering and terrorism financing. In a statement issued on Thursday, Moneyval said Malta has succeeded to meet general expectations after a series of deficiencies were identified by Moneyval in 2019. It said Malta improved measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, demonstrating “significant progress” in the level of compliance with the Financial Action Task Force Standards. An amendment to make it possible to enforce a law that makes it compulsory on employers of more than 20 people to include 2% of disabled people in their workforce or pay a contribution was moved in Parliament on Tuesday by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana. The Nationalist Opposition said it will be supporting the amendment. Moving the second reading of a bill on the employment of people with disability, Caruana said that although it was currently compulsory for employers to include disabled people in their workforce, the clause was not enforceable and many employers ignored it. The amendment will ensure that action would be taken against those who did so and refused to pay a contribution to make up for this. ....
Malta Will Have New €2.5 Million Asset Recovery Facility By 2024 Share: A new facility that will allow authorities to safely store assets seized by the courts will be operational by 2024, Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis announced on Tuesday. The state-of-the-art facility will be spread over roughly two tumuli of land in Ħal Far and will cost the government €2.5 million. Addressing a press conference at the site of the new facility, Zammit Lewis said that the project showed that the government was taking the fight against financial crime seriously, adding that its responsibility went beyond enacting legal reforms. At the start of the year, Parliament approved new legislation which provides the bureau with a stronger legal basis for it to carry out its functions. ....
Italpress 18 Febbraio 2021 LA VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Maltese Government is holding talks with the European Commission to grant state aid to the national airline, Air Malta. Clyde Caruana, the Minister of Finance confirmed that negotiations are taking place and added that Air Malta is making a loss of 170,000 every day just to operate its aircrafts, and without the state aid, the Maltese national airline will go into bankrupcy in few weeks. Minister Caruana said that the present administration needa to present the European Commission an “honest and credible” plan to save the national airline. The Nationalist Opposition is accusing the Labour government that over the years, the European Commission was told false information about the state of the national airline. ....
