Locals frustrated as Whangārei highway plans are halted

The brakes have once again been slammed on plans for a four-lane highway near Whangārei - and local leaders are furious.
The road between Whangārei and Marsden Point has been a regional transport priority for more than 10 years, but an upgrade has today been substituted for a new rail line out to the port.
KiwiRail and NorthPort say it will be a game changer for the area - but many Northlanders aren't impressed.
Nita Blake-Persen filed this report.

OPINION:
It was the day before the Budget, and National s Shane Reti turned up with the stick of dynamite that would expose Labour s dastardly plan: or at least, he thought he did.
Reti had obtained
a letter from Health Minister Andrew Little to Finance Minister Grant Robertson with suggestions for saving money in the health sector: or at least he thought he had.
Robertson had said a while ago that about $1 billion in spare cash had been found by ministers doing a stocktake of their portfolios. The letter included a range of options for programmes or services that could be cut to save money in health. ....

The public health overhaul that had to happen

What are Māori health inequities? The Ministry of Health lists them. First published June 2019.
ANALYSIS: Radical centralisation. That’s the best way to describe the Government’s proposed reforms to the health and disability service. It s the health reform that had to happen.
In what will be a massive shock to many in the healthcare system, the number of District Health Boards will not be reduced as expected, but the whole governance architecture created in the early years of the Helen Clark Government two decades ago will be dismantled.
Minister of Health Andrew Little is clear: he wants a national health service freed from the competing priorities, duplication and wildy varying quality of the DHBs. ....

Live updates, February 26: Auckland KFC worker tests positive for Covid-19

Jacinda Ardern is warning New Zealanders of the “repercussions” for breaking the rules around Covid-19.
It was revealed today an Auckland KFC worker has tested positive for the coronavirus, after entering quarantine earlier this week (see the 1.45pm update).
Speaking to media, the prime minister said the latest case “should have” stayed home.
“Ultimately, we’re asking now of course now that we’re dealing with the fact that that situation arose, for everyone who may have come in contact to do the right thing, to make sure they’re isolating and make sure they’re testing,” Ardern said, according to Newshub. “That is how the rest of the country is able to stay at level one with all of their freedoms. They’re paying a price for everyone and doing the right thing for everyone.” ....
