‘Set up special courts for forest, wildlife crimes in every district’ Updated: Updated: It will lead to hearing of such cases in effective manner: PIL plea Share Article It will lead to hearing of such cases in effective manner: PIL plea A Madurai-based activist filed a public interest litigation petition before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Centre and the State to establish special courts in every district of the State to deal with forest and wildlife crimes. In his petition, C. Anand Raj said conviction rate in wildlife crimes was very low and delayed conviction did not serve any purpose. There was a need to set up special courts to hear such cases in an effective manner. He said India’s rich flora and fauna had always been a target of illegal wildlife trade. The crimes against wildlife also had an impact on the economy, development and the security of the country.

XLRI goes online with Verghese Kurien lecture

The Xavier School of Management (XLRI) is set to host the seventh Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration, in memory of the Father of White Revolution and the man behind Amul,  on January 16, 2021. This time, the oration will be delivered by noted environmental activist Ashish Kothari,  founder-member of Indian Environmental group, Kalpavriksh. It will be conducted virtually in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. He would deliver the oration on the topic Ecoswaraj : Recovery Towards Justice and Sustainability. XLRI Director Fr. P. Christie said, “Dr. Verghese Kurien was an ingenious thinker, a revolutionary, and a social entrepreneur who ideated the world’s biggest agricultural development programme. It was his “billion-litre idea”, which made dairy farming India’s largest self-sustaining industry, with benefits of employment, incomes, credit, nutrition, education, health, gender parity and empowerment, breaking down caste barriers and grassroots democracy and leadership.”
