China Drafts Law to Punish Countries that Sanction It for Human Rights

China’s rubber-stamp legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), is considering a law that would formalize retaliation against other nations for sanctions against China for its human rights abuses, state-run media reported on Tuesday.
China’s state-run Xinhua news service portrayed the draft law as China striking back at dishonest critics who unfairly accuse it of atrocities.
“For some time … some Western countries have used Xinjiang and Hong Kong-related issues as part of their pretexts to spread rumors on and smear, contain and suppress China,” Xinhua argued, citing a “spokesperson office of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee.” Xinjiang is the country’s westernmost region, home to the nation’s ethnic Uyghur minority. Beijing Adopts Plan to Control Hong Kong Elections
China’s rubber-stamp legislature has approved a draft decision to change Hong Kong’s electoral system, making it virtually impossible for the opposition to affect the outcome of elections.
On March 11, the final day of the annual plenum of the National People’s Congress (NPC), 2,895 delegates voted in favor of the electoral overhaul with zero against and one abstention.
The electoral changes will further reduce democratic representation in the former British colony and introduce a mechanism to vet politicians’ loyalty to the Chinese regime and make sure that only “patriots” are allowed to rule Hong Kong. ....

Chinese lawmakers back move to tighten grip on Hong Kong

China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) on Thursday backed a move to further tighten Beijing’s grip over Hong Kong s government amid widespread protests.
The measure, approved nearly unanimously in the ceremonial legislature, would hand power to a Chinese-controlled committee to select more of Hong Kong’s lawmakers, reducing the number of politicians who are elected by voters to the 90-seat legislature.
“The meeting has also passed a motion to overhaul Hong Kong’s … electoral system, which was passed almost unanimously. This has expressed the resolute determination of people around the country, including those from Hong Kong, to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and safe development, as well as Hong Kong’s constitutional order,” said Li Zhanshu, chair of the NPC Standing Committee. ....
