The National Obstetric Fistula Centre (NOFIC), in Ebonyi has said that early girl child marriage and exposure to sexual intercourse before age 16, is a predisposing factor to cervical cancer.
The Medical Director of NOFIC, Prof. Johnson Obuna, made the remark on Friday, during the flag-off of a Free Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment for women in the state.
The exercise was organised by the state government through the state Executive Committee on Medical Screening in collaboration with the office of the governor’s wife, Mrs Rachael Umahi.
Obuna said that giving out a girl child to marriage before 16 years of age made them prone to cancer.

Consultants have taken over the provision of skeletal services to patients following the ongoing strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which enters the fifth day today.
Relatives have also intensified the evacuation of patients to private hospitals, THISDAY has learnt.
When THISDAY visited the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi and Federal Medical Centre in Azare, only very senior physicians and nurses were attending to patients.
Bauchi State branch Chairman of NARD, Dr. Muhammad Nur Algazali, said members of the union had withdrawn their services in compliance with the directive of the national body of the union.

The Harass Buhari Out of London rally held in London, yesterday, April 2, 2021 was a resounding success.
Convener of the rally, Reno Omokri, was at Buhari’s residence, Abuja House, 2 Campden Hill, Kensington, London W8 7AD.
The rally was held in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols with protesters massing in groups of six.
The London Metropolitan Police were called in by the Nigerian High Commission but were unable to stop the process. After questioning Mr. Omokri and observing that the event was orderly, peaceful and not in breach of COVI-19 protocols, the police allowed the protest to continue.
