Inadequate govt support, job loss leave them ravaged amid pandemic; no official data on those affected by the crisis
Holding a paperboard over her head to shield herself from the scorching sun, Fulmoti, 75, waits for handouts at Khilkhet level crossing in the capital yesterday. Widowed after the Liberation War, the mother of two used to work at a local restaurant as a cooking assistant. She lost informal sector job last year after the eatery was shut amid the pandemic. Experts urge mass vaccination against Covid-19 - Newspaper

ISLAMABAD: While Covid-19 continues to affect a large segment of population, efforts to counter it with effective vaccination campaign are far from being satisfactory and this follows a dismal response to following SOPs causing large-scale illnesses and deaths.
This was stated by Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) Punjab president Dr Shabbir Ahmad Kallu, Dr Iftikhar Burney, PIMA Islamabad president, and other health experts at a press conference at the National Press Club on Friday.
The speakers urged society to take the problem seriously. Government and society both should appreciate the dangers of the pandemic and opt for vaccination before the existing wave goes out of control. ....

Bill Shorten 'not sure' he would take Labor's 2019 emissions target to next election | Australia news

Reinforcing commentary critical of the Morrison government last week, the deputy economics counsellor at the US embassy, Steve Dyokas, confirmed the Biden administration was “pressing Australia to do more”. Dyokas said all nations “have to raise our sights together” with a sense of urgency.
He said there had been “a lot of talk” in the press about “the issue of pushing Australia” to take stronger action.
“Our line is: yes, the US is pressing Australia to do more, just as the US is pressing every other country in the world – including ourselves – to do more,” Dyokas said at an event at the Australian National University on Tuesday night. ....

It is a “terrible indictment” on Australia that it took Brittany Higgins’ allegation of sexual harassment in parliament to put gender equality back into focus for the government, according to Michele O’Neil.
In a speech to the National Press Club on Tuesday, the Australian Council of Trade Unions president will put the Morrison government on notice that it must do more to boost stagnant wages and reverse women’s economic inequality.
O’Neil’s warning comes as a new report from the Australia Institute urges the Coalition to deliver a “less sexist” budget, proposing several measures to address what it says has been a “massive bias” towards men in previous Coalition budgets. ....

US Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Cancellation of Belt and Road Initiative in Australia

US Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Cancellation of Belt and Road Initiative in Australia
U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has applauded the Australian government’s decision to axe the controversial Belt and Road Initiative agreement signed by the Victorian state government.
Scott said in a statement, “Communist China’s Belt and Road Initiative has one mission, to extend its control over other nations and advance its quest for world domination.”
“I applaud the decision of the Australian government to stand up to Communist China and refuse to take part in General Secretary Xi’s master plan,” he added.
“I hope every nation around the world that has agreed to projects with Beijing will recognise the Communist Party’s sinister geopolitical strategy and follow Australia’s example.” ....
