One of the emerging dilemmas in Nigeria’s democracy is the serious threat it regularly confronts from misguided utterances of people lacking experience and wisdom in politics or governance who exploit the unscrupulous exuberance of the media to ambush public attention. The indiscriminate propagation of such utterances usually sparks political outrage capable of escalating simmering contentions into public disturbances. The reality of deliberate incitement of political crises by non-political actors, frequently curtailed by the swift intervention of the DSS to take the culprits to task, is looming larger on the political arena, as the 2023 elections draw closer. ....

Ayoade: Nigeria is Neither Federal Nor Republic


· Recommends civil education for operators of constitution
An Emeritus Professor of Political Science, University of Ibadan, Prof. John Ayoade has said the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as currently being referred to, is neither federal nor republic.
Ayoade, a member of the 2005 National Political Reform Conference (NPRC) and Director of Studies of the defunct Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), justified his position on the ground that the governing document of the federation lacked foundational philosophy, an essential ingredient that defines a republic.
He expressed these views on Arise News Channels, the broadcast arm of THISDAY Newspapers Group on Thursday, pointing out diverse reasons the National Assembly should not continue with the amendment of 1999 Constitution (As Amended). ....

A group, the Ogoni Justice Foundation for Human Rights Development has charged the Federal Government to implement the 1997 United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights and other White Paper reports on Ogoniland and the country.
Specifically, it cited the 2001 Ogomudia Report, 2003 White Paper Report of the Presidential Panel on Security, 2003 Report on First International Conference on Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta and United Nations Development Programme’s (UNEP) report.
Others are, the 2004 Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan, 2005 National Political Reform Conference, 2006 Niger Delta Human Development and 2006 Report of the Presidential Council on Social and Economic Development of the Coastal States of Niger Delta. ....

The inimitable Chancellor of the Eastern Mandate Union (EMU), Arthur Agwuncha Nwankwo, was interred in his home in Ajalli, Anambra State, on Thursday, December 10, in this year of our lord. He passed away at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu in the afternoon of Saturday, February 1, 2020. The COVID-19 outbreak put his interment on hold until now.
In his cherished lifetime, Arthur Nwankwo spoke truth to power with unconquerable courage. His clarity of vision was nonpareil. He had an endearing common touch, mixing with the mighty and the lowly with consummate ease. ....
