Funding from the National Park Service helps to preserve Indiana history

Funding from the National Park Service will be used to rebuild and preserve 14 historic and archaeological sites across Indiana, including a church in Angola, an iron bridge in Fort Wayne, old campsites near in Monroe and Morgan counties and an aging school building in Monticello. The announcement of the $481,000 in grants, which must be matched by local communities, was made Wednesday by the Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology of the state Department of Natural Resources.  Through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Funds (HPF) program, states receive money to preserve the landmarks and places significant in their history. Since 2000, Indiana has awarded $11 million to assist more than 500 historical projects. Among this year’s recipients are the Angola Powers Church, the City of Fort Wayne parks department, Ball State University and the Twin Lakes School Corporation.

Senate leaves defense spending bill out of earmarked accounts

By JENNIFER SHUTT AND PAUL M. KRAWZAK | CQ-Roll Call | Published: May 13, 2021 WASHINGTON (Tribune News Service) – House and Senate appropriators could be headed for a challenging conference process later this year when both chambers try to reconcile the different accounts they’ve made eligible for earmark requests. The Senate Appropriations Committee’s list of eligible accounts, released Wednesday, leaves out the Defense spending bill entirely and selects various accounts throughout nine funding bills that don’t match up neatly with their counterparts on the House Appropriations Committee. The mismatched earmark accounts will likely cause headaches for subcommittee chairs and ranking members months from now when they need to merge the House and Senate’s fiscal 2022 bills, including fitting their earmarked projects under their respective spending caps.
