More than half of the Omani population is now overweight or obese, according to the latest data.
Muscat: Efforts to protect children from COVID-19 by keeping them at home have unfortunately led to many of them putting on excess weight during the pandemic period.
No school, and a lack of outdoor activity is turning weight gain into a real problem for them, say health specialists in the country.

CNA-Q, HMC partner to offer diabetes education program

Doha: The Continuing and Professional Education department at College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q) has joined hands with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) for the sixth year to offer ‘The Fundamentals of Diabetes Education’ program.
The latter includes tailored courses that provide HMC employees with the necessary skills and knowledge required to specialize in the field of diabetes education, and contribute to Qatar’s National Diabetes Strategy 2016-22.
The initiative is an important step in actively responding to the diabetes health challenge in the State of Qatar.
Professionals taking part in this program will acquire a solid foundation in diabetes-care management, and will have the chance to practice and apply their knowledge in a safe environment. Furthermore, participants will be trained on how to interact with patients of all ages and from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. ....

Launch of Oman Obesity Briefing Book to raise awareness on obesity

The Ministry of Health recently launched the Oman Obesity Briefing Book . This important document has been developed as a collaboration between the National Diabetes and Endocrine Centre (NDEC), the Department of Non-Communicable Disease, the Department of Nutrition, the Oman Diabetes Association and Novo Nordisk, a Danish multinational pharmaceutical company. The launch took place through a Hybrid event, with a number of representatives, renowned health practitioners and industry leaders from the Ministry of Health in attendance.
In his welcome address, H.E, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Obaid Al Saidi, Minister of Health, said, “Oman faces a growing rise in the burden of obesity among its population. More than half of the Omani population are now overweight or obese with 30% of the population having a BMI of more than 30. These figures showed a rise in the prevalence of obesity in Oma ....
