UPDATE 1-SWIFT sets up JV with China's central bank

SHANGHAI, Feb 4 (Reuters) - SWIFT, the global system for financial messaging and cross-border payments, has set up a joint venture with the Chinese central bank’s digital currency research institute and clearing centre, a move some see as a sign that China wants to explore global use of its planned digital yuan.
Other shareholders of the Beijing-based venture include China’s Cross-border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) and the Payment & Clearing Association of China, both supervised by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), according to public information.
The new entity, called Finance Gateway Information Services Co, was established in Beijing on Jan. 16, and its business scope includes information system integration, data processing and technological consultancy, according to the website of the National Enterprise Credit Information Public System. ....

SWIFT stands one of the most prominent global cross-border payment and financial messaging systems out there. Now, however, SWIFT has opted to expand, doing so through a joint venture with the clearing center and digital currency research institute of China’s central bank. Of course, this makes China’s plans of using its digital yuan on a global scale clear as day, as well.
East And West Coming Together
This new joint venture will be based in Beijing, and will have other notable shareholders within it as well, such as the Payment & Clearing Association of China, as well as the Cross-border Interbank Payment System, or CIPS. Both of these entities are themselves supervised by the People’s Bank of China, or PBOC. ....
