Guidelines for the 2022 National Folk Fellowship
The annual National Folk Fellowship is offered jointly by the National Library of Australia and the National Folk Festival. The National Library holds the most significant collections of folklore and related material in Australia. This Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for the recipient to discover and explore original collected material at the Library for use in their own artistic work. The outcome of this residency at the National Library will result in a performance at the 2022 National Folk Festival, and any recordings arising from the project will be acquired for the National Library’s Oral History ....

Archer’s project,
In the Land where the Crow flies backwards: The songs of western NSW, has as its centre point the songs of the infamous troubadour, Mr Dougie Young, but also looks at lesser-known characters from that era of the fifties and sixties and earlier, as well as up until today. The project focuses mainly on Indigenous songwriters, telling their stories through songs and poems, and of course the song of the red-tailed black cockatoo.
Archer is a folk singer, and self-proclaimed ill-fated explorer of the interior recesses of the embattled brain-box and beyond . Best described as an old-style travelling singer/poet, for the better part of the last 20 years, Archer has humped his bluey through every state in Australia, walking, hitchhiking, and catching trains, sleeping on the riverbanks and in the parks, singing in the streets, to performing in music halls of some renown. The Library offers Fellowships to support practising writers and artists to develop new work creatively using or inspired by the Library’s collections. The Fellowships offers artists a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the collections. Artists can be inspired by, repurpose, transform or imaginatively respond to published sources, such as music, maps, rare books or ephemera, or original sources, such as pictures, manuscripts, oral histories and folklore recordings.
Creative Arts Fellowships offer a $10,000 grant to support writers and artists to spend four weeks in the Library developing an artistic concept, artwork or body of work inspired or informed by the collections. ....
