The Back Story: Tracing the history of women in local politics

The Union-Tribune’s Phenomenal Women project showcased throughout 2020 on the cover of the Sunday paper is a celebration of a century of female achievement in San Diego. The U-T launched it this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the United States.
The project is organized by fields of achievement. Medicine, which kicked off the project in April, featured physician and suffragette Charlotte Baker. Science, in May, featured Sally Ride. In June, women representing two generations of social and political advocacy in San Diego were featured Rachel Ortiz, Dr. Shirley Weber and Geneviéve Jones-Wright. In August, we featured women in the field of sports, spotlighting Audrey “Mickey” Patterson-Tyler, a legend in track and field. And in September, we honored women in the arts, featuring author Pam Muñoz Ryan. ....

Below are names of all the women elected or appointed as city council members, mayors, county supervisors, members of the state Legislature and members of Congress representing the people of the San Diego region by the year they first took office. The list does not include numerous other women elected to other important public positions, such as school boards, planning commissions and city clerks.
(Women ran for elective office in San Diego well before the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in August 1920. In 1889, Flora Kimball, an educator and advocate of equal suffrage, made history when she was elected to the National City School Board. On Oct. 10, 1911, voters passed an amendment to the California Constitution that granted women the right to vote in the state for the first time.) ....
