Saturday, 13 February, 2021, 08 : 00 AM [IST] Nandita Vijay, Bengaluru ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research)-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) has developed a virus-resistant chilli variety. The institute said that it would not release the variant directly in the market but would share it with the Krishi Vignana Kendras (KVKs) across the state and country to check the efficacy of the product. Based on the results in the location-specific KVKs, the chilli seeds may be released in the market in that particular region. We have developed a chilli variety resistant to the leaf curl virus, which causes maximum damage to the chilli plants, said Dr K Madhavi Reddy, Principal Scientist, Division of Vegetable Crops, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, at the sidelines of the ongoing National Horticulture Fair-2021 being held in the campus from February 8 to 12. ....

Snapshot According to the Kolkata-based Directorate-General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, India exported 13.17 lakh tonnes of onion between April and October this fiscal before the ban was imposed. Onion shipments from India are facing problems after the Union government lifted the ban on exports from 1 January this year, first in wooing back importers and now due to rising domestic prices. The Union government banned onion exports in September last year after the vegetableâs retail prices began to surge. In the second week of October, the rates topped Rs 100 a kg in retail outlets. ....

This was in contrast with a section of farmers, especially from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, staging a sit-in protest along Delhi borders for the last two months demanding the union government to repeal three contentious laws that were passed last year.
