Fires in the last four days have left five families homeless. Three families of Vunikavika Settlement in Sigatoka lost their four bedroom corrugated iron house, this morning. A family also a family lost their five-bedroom house last Friday at Ratu Kadavulevu Road in Visama, Nausori while another family from Navua lost their two-bedroom house last Saturday. National Fire Authority chief executive Puamau Sowane said the fire incident this morning is the third residential fire within a span of only four days and this raises a lot of concern. “The increase in residential fire incidents indicates that people are not taking fire safety seriously around their homes and properties,” he said. ....

National Fire Authority chief executive Puamau Sowane said officers at the Korovou Fire Station received an alert of the house fire by a 910 call at 1.37 pm. Sowane in a statement said upon arrival at the scene, the fire team found a teacher’s quarters fully engulfed in flames. “It is believed the teacher who occupied the quarters was away with family during this school holidays,” he said. “We need to take necessary precautions in our homes to avoid such fire incidents, we will continue to invest in raising fire awareness through all media outlets. ....

The National Fire Authority was alerted of the fire at 1.37 pm and the fire team from Korovou Fire Station responded immediately. The teacher who occupied the quarters was away with family. A few belongings of the family in the house was destroyed. The NFA says an investigation will be done to determine the cause of the fire incident. National Fire Authority chief executive Puamau Sowane said the fire team found a five-bedroom corrugated iron house fully engulfed in flames at 5 am. Sowane in a statement said the team quickly used one delivery of water from the fire truck to extinguish the fire. He said for an individual to lose their homes and belongings in a fire at this time is devastating for anyone. “We are already in the middle of a pandemic, many businesses closed and people jobless during the lockdown periods. We just cannot afford to lose our homes in the process”, he said. ....
