A video of a professor calling her students “bloody bastards” has sparked outrage around how minorities are treated at India’s elite institutes.
In a video that went viral on social media on April 25, Seema Singh, a professor at the department of humanities and social sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), can be seen and heard foul-mouthing students and berating them after she thought some of them had not stood up for the national anthem.
The video was first posted on the Facebook page IIT-KGP confessions.
The video was shot during Singh’s Prep English Course, which is meant for students from the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and persons with disabilities. The one-year preparatory class is aimed at helping students from these communities to secure a seat the following year if they make the cut-off but are unable to get direct admission. ....

Expressway blockade, black flags and bands will mark the 100th day of the farmer’s struggle on March 6, as per the programme released by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha.
A 5-hour blockade of the KMP Expressway, which connects various protest sites outside Delhi, has been announced. Farmer leaders have also urged supporters across India to hoist black flags on houses and offices and wear black bands on March 6, in protest of the government.

Activists seek intervention for co-accused Shiv Kumar, who is still in jail.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Haryana Police for a report on a complaint that labour activist Nodeep Kaur, who was arrested on January 12 after a stir to demand workers’ wages in Kundli, was harassed and tortured in custody.
The Sonipat Superintendent of Police (SP) was on February 18 given four weeks to respond, according to the proceedings. Ms. Kaur was released on bail on February 26. According to the complaint, “the victim who is a social activist was illegally arrested in a false complaint, was harassed, sexually assaulted in the police custody, and was subjected to police torture”. ....
