Gov. Beshear Declares May 'Nurse Suicide Prevention Month' in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 13, 2021) – In an effort to raise awareness about nurses mental health and help curb the rate of nurse suicide, Governor Andy Beshear has declared May as Nurse Suicide Prevention Month in Kentucky.
University of Kentucky College of Nursing Dean Janie Heath joined Delanor Manson, president of the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA), Donna Meador, CEO of KNA and other Kentucky nurse leaders who have advocated for increased nurse suicide awareness to announce the important prevention declaration during a virtual signing ceremony with Gov. Beshear on May 5.     
Nurses are known for providing exemplary care and compassion for their patients, but oftentimes they ignore prioritizing their own health and well-being, said Heath, who is also president of the Kentucky Nurses Action Coalition (KNAC). Increase in COVID-19 hospitalization sparks fears of 3rd surge
Officials with ValleyWise Health say as of May 5, there are 18 people in their ICU due to COVID-19, compared with just five at the end of April. Ventilator use, meanwhile, has also increased.
PHOENIX - While many in Arizona are hoping to get life back to normal by the summer, a local health organization says not so fast, as they are seeing an uptick in new COVID-19 cases.
Officials with ValleyWise Health say over the last two weeks, they have seen an increase in the number of patients being hospitalized with COVID-19. At the end of April, they had only five people in the ICU, and no ventilators in use. As of the morning of May 5, that number has jumped to 18 hospitalized COVID patients, with seven of them using a ventilator. ....

Nurses all over the world have gone above and beyond to deliver extraordinary care in the face of a global health crisis while still facing the demands of other professional and personal obligations. As National Nurses Month gets underway, Lynn Kelso, an assistant professor in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and an acute care nurse practitioner in UK HealthCare’s medical intensive care unit (MICU), reflects on the challenges she and her colleagues faced over the past year.

One of the fundamental challenges of human existence is determining where our priorities lie. Unfortunately, Baron Dominique-Jean Larrey, Surgeon in Chief to Napoleon s Imperial Guard, often found his lying on the ground. 
Operating frequently within the midst of mass casualty events at the turn of the 19th century, Larrey helped refine a system for prioritizing care for the wounded according to the severity of their injuries. The process that we now know as triage derives from a French word meaning to break into three pieces originally that meant filtering groups who required 1) immediate, 2) urgent, or 3) non-urgent medical attention.  ....
