NGOs press before OECD to reject Brazil's application over environment issues

Several non-government organizations (NGOs) focused on environmental issues Wednesday launched an accusation against the government of Brazil for violating international treaties and devastating the Amazon.
In a letter to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General head Angel Gurría and Mathias Cormann, who is to succeed him on June 1, the NGOs pressed from Brazil s exclusion from that body.
”Giving a vote of confidence to the Brazilian government would be a harsh message (.) it would perpetuate offenses against international norms on climate protection such as the Paris Agreement,“ the letter read. ....

Palm oil, a crop synonymous with deforestation and community conflicts in Southeast Asia, is making inroads in the Brazilian Amazon, where the same issues are playing out.
Indigenous and traditional communities say the plantations in their midst are polluting their water, poisoning their soil, and driving away fish and game.
Scientists have found high levels of agrochemical residues in these communities though still within Brazil’s legal limits while prosecutors are pursuing legal cases against the companies for allegedly violating Indigenous and traditional communities’ rights and damaging the environment. ....
